What We Do

Literacy Program

Encouraging Literacy With Young Learners

Since 2007, Canine Classmates has been dedicated to enhancing reading literacy in children by leveraging the unique bond between young learners and canine companions in the classroom. Currently serving 23 schools in New Braunfels ISD, Comal ISD, and Navarro ISD, our program facilitated over 7,000 one-on-one reading sessions last year alone. We understand that at-risk children face challenges when it comes to reading aloud, whether due to intimidation, self-consciousness, or language difficulties. Our approach is to create a safe and nurturing environment where these barriers are removed, allowing children to read with confidence. By providing the opportunity to read to a dog, we help children overcome their fears and insecurities, transforming reading from a chore into a pleasurable experience.
